Why is it important?

Surgery is mostly a life-changing experience. No matter what sort of surgery you have undergone, from – joint replacements to open-heart surgery – undergoing rehab after surgery with a physical therapist is vital to maximize your physical strength, speed up recovery and help you get back to your normal self and daily routine.

As your body is healing, you are likely to experience pain, inflammation and swelling, making it difficult to do daily tasks like dressing, standing and walking. You may also have specific instruction to follow from your surgical team, which helps prevent complications. Post-surgical rehabilitation thus is a non-invasive, drug-free and evidence-based way to regain your strength, balance, flexibility and mobility after surgery. Physiotherapy can help manage pain and lessen the dependence on medicines.

Our therapy

Our physical therapist will help you adapt to the new changes in your body and help you learn how to use certain tools and adaptive equipment (crutches and braces etc.).The therapy expert will review your medical history and come up with rehab goals. Depending on your specific needs, a therapy program will be designed and implemented, including exercises and techniques to help you regain your health.

The post-surgical rehab will include therapeutic exercises, electrical stimulation, laser therapy, gait and balance training, neuromuscular re-orientation, ice and heat therapies, dry needling and counselling. Depending on the type of surgery, you may need physical therapy more frequently in the early period of recovery and less often as you go on.
