What is Hijama/Cupping?

Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that originated in China. It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. The suction may facilitate healing with blood flow. During the treatment, several cups are heated and placed on the skin, which produces suction onto the skin. The cup is heated using fires from alcohol, herbs or paper placed directly into the cup. When the hot cup is placed on the skin, it produces a vacuum that draws the skin and muscle upward into the cup. The skin may turn red as blood vessels react to the change of pressure. Cupping has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including muscle aches and pains.
